Need more theatres for good cinema: Adoor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the wave created by film society movement is receding, the need of the hour is to have more theatres available for good cinema, said filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan after releasing the book, "India"s Film Society Movement: The Journey and Its Impact", by journalist-turned-writer V K Cherian here on Wednesday.

Gopalakrishnan released the book by handing over a copy to CPM leader M A Baby , writer Paul Zacharia, filmmakers TV Chandran and Kamal.

The veteran director said that Kerala State Film Development Corporation must take initiative to introduce at least a 100-seat theatre like the Academy Cinema in London across the state where people interested in quality cinema could go and enjoy.

"Now, people take some time to decide on watching so me quality films. By the time they decide, it would have left theatres. So a minimum of two-three weeks must be given to such films," he said.

Now theatres and even TV channels do not screen quali channels do not screen quality films and thus people have lost taste for good cinema, which they gained during the film society movement, he said. Gopalakrishnan said that film society movement was reason for the formation of a New Wave in the Malayalam cinema.
