Need more theatres for good cinema: Adoor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the wave created by film society movement is receding, the need of the hour is to have more theatres available for good cinema, said filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan after releasing the book, "India"s Film Society Movement: The Journey and Its Impact", by journalist-turned-writer V K Cherian here on Wednesday.

Gopalakrishnan released the book by handing over a copy to CPM leader M A Baby , writer Paul Zacharia, filmmakers TV Chandran and Kamal.

The veteran director said that Kerala State Film Development Corporation must take initiative to introduce at least a 100-seat theatre like the Academy Cinema in London across the state where people interested in quality cinema could go and enjoy.

"Now, people take some time to decide on watching so me quality films. By the time they decide, it would have left theatres. So a minimum of two-three weeks must be given to such films," he said.

Now theatres and even TV channels do not screen quali channels do not screen quality films and thus people have lost taste for good cinema, which they gained during the film society movement, he said. Gopalakrishnan said that film society movement was reason for the formation of a New Wave in the Malayalam cinema.

Birth certificate of Dhanush is fake, claims elderly couple

An aged couple, who have claimed that popular actor Dhanush is their son, have accused him of producing a fake birth certificate before the Madras High Court bench here to get their case pending before a lower court at nearby Melur quashed. In their counter affidavit before the Melur Judicial Magistrate on Wednesday, R Kathiresan and Meenakshi submitted that they could prove their claim that Dhanush was their son, if the trial was conducted.

Dangal tops, then Raees and Kaabil

It is noteworthy that "Dangal" has continued to hold its ground despite two big releases - Shah Rukh Khan"s "Raees" and Hrithik Roshan"s "Kaabil", both of which hit theatres on January 25. As for the two biggies of January, the collection of "Kaabil" up to Day 9 is pegged at over Rs 90 crore while that of "Raees" read over Rs 115 crore on Day 8. So on Worldwide total boxoffice collection of Raees reaches 215Crores and Kaabil on 156Crores.
